Lions Outlast Vikings

Toms River, NJ – The Lions believed they were going to be in a for a tough match while preparing for Ocean County College, and they were right. The Vikings and Lions traded blows back and forth all night on Monday with the visiting Lions coming out on top, 3-1 in a tightly contested Region XIX and GSAC showdown.

The first two sets saw multiple ties, lead changes, extended rallies, and both teams battling back from 4-point deficits on numerous occasions. The Lions came out flat in the third set as Ocean ran away with the frame 25-12. With all the momentum in the Vikings' corner heading into the fourth set the Lions' composure and fight proved to be too much for Ocean County to handle.

Kelly Delaney had a monstrous double double for the Lions finishing with season highs in both kills and digs at 18 a piece. It seemed that whenever the Lions needed a point Delaney was there to step up and secure if for them. Rachel Hatto and Sona Petrusova were staples of the defense for the Lions as Hatto finished with a team high 21 digs and Petrusova notched 14 on the night. Freshmen Danna Gaitan and Madison Cobb were solid on offense for the Lions as they finished with 7 and 6 kills respectively. Sophomore setter Reagan Mooney moved the ball around well for the offense and she finished the night with 27 assists and one huge solo block. Skylee Ohler and Alanna Da Cunha gave the hitters from Ocean County problems all night with their length at the net, deflecting many hits and causing the opposition to tip a lot of their shots. The Lions would close out the final frame 25-19.

The Lions currently sit at 6-2 on the season and hold a perfect 4-0 mark in Region XIX and GSAC play. They return to action on Wed night at 7 PM as they host Sussex County College.
