Lions Sweep Bucs

North Branch, NJ – The RVCC Women's Volleyball team defeated the visiting Buccaneers from Atlantic Cape Community College on Thursday night by a final score of 3-0. This is the second time this year the Lions beat the Bucs, but the first that counts toward the GSAC and Region XIX standings.

Kelly Delaney led the way for the Lions with 11 kills on the night. Freshman Danna Gaitan and Sophomore Alanna Da Cunha each had 4 kills, while Freshmen Madison Cobb and Skylee Ohler registered 3 a piece. Sophomore Setter, Reagan Mooney had a season high 22 assists and 1 kill of her own. The Lions' serving was too much for the Bucs all night, the team would go on to finish with 15 service aces. Mooney led the team with 5 service aces, Delaney had 4, Gaitan had 3, Libero Rachel Hatto had 2, and Da Cunha finished with 1. Hatto led the team with 9 digs while Delaney finished the night right behind her with 8 digs. Cobb, a Middle Blocker from Delaware Valley Regional High School, had 2 solo blocks with a strong defensive performance.

The Lions came out of the gate strong and started the first set up 7-0 before Atlantic Cape registered their first point. The Buccaneers never got closer than 6 points in the first set. After a dominant second set the Lions didn't come out very strong in the third frame and Atlantic Cape was close with the score tied 15-15. Kelly Delaney stepped to the service line and won seven straight points for the Loins to put the set out of reach for Atlantic Cape and secure the sweep for the second time this season.

The Lions are now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in both Region XIX and Garden State Athletic Conference play. The team returns to the floor Wednesday night at 6 PM as they travel to take on the Roadrunners from RCSJ-Gloucester.
