Lions Lose Close One Against Brookdale

North Branch, NJ-- The RVCC women's volleyball team lost a tight match against Brookdale Community College Saturday. Brookdale won 3-1, as they took set one 25-14 and two 25-13. However RVCC was able to battle back and take an exciting third set by a score of 25-22. Broodkale outlasted the Lions in the last set 25-15.

Freshman outside hitter Brooke Scheier led the team with seven kills and four service aces. Sophomore middle hitter Gabrielle Saydee was again a prescence in the middle as she had five kills and three blocks. Freshman libero Hannah Eisenstien had another strong defensive outing, as she had 20 digs. Controlling the offense was freshman setter Jelitza Rodriguez as she tallied 13 assists. The Lions were resilient and fought back against the Brookdale momentum in the third set. This marks the first set victory for the RVCC program.

Head Coach Phil Herro took some time to reflect on his team's progress, saying "Heading into the match I was pretty confident in the girls chances to win as we had a couple of close matches earlier in the week. After being down two sets I told the girls this is your chance to prove to me we are still going in the right direction. I thought the first set we played poorly, and the second we were able to fight back. We were down 16-6 at one point yet we fought back and made it respectable. I told them that second set was the favorite set i saw them play all year, and that third set they really showed me that we are taking steps in the right direction and we weren't gonna give up despite being down 2-0. I'm proud of them, but now our expecations are higher and hopefully we'll come out and get a couple of wins this week."

Next up for the Lions is another home game on Tuesday, September 13th against Rowan College at Gloucester County beginning at 6:30pm.
