Garden City, NY - The RVCC Women's Volleyball Team opened up their season on Saturday September 24th with three games at Nassau Community College's Invitational. The team traveled up to Long Island for an early morning matchup with the host team, Nassau Community College Lions. With only one scrimmage under their belts and just over one week of pratice the RVCC Lions weren't really sure what to expect from themselves. The team which returns five Sophomores, all of which started at some point last season, were able to use their experience to help influence the outcome of the game. RVCC went on to beat the host team by a final score of 3-0.
Riding their momentum from the first game into the second, RVCC took the first set against the Community College of Rhode Island. After dropping the second set the Lions would go on to win the next two sets, beating the Knights 3-1.
Although it wasn't planned the final matchup of the day showcased the two undefeated teams thus far in RVCC and Harcum College. RVCC and Harcum played last season with the Bears beating the Lions 3-1 in Philadelphia, so RVCC had plenty of added motivation for the game. RVCC came out strong once again and took the first set to go up 1-0. After a somewhat lopsided second set the two teams headed into the third at one set a piece. With the Bears up 8-2 in the third RVCC looked to be on the brink of defeat when the team rallied together to pull off an impressive comeback win. In the fourth and final set RVCC had game point three separate times before they finally finished off the Bears 3-1.
This season's squad returns five sophomores from last years Garden State Athletic Conference Championship team. Tess Rogovin at setter, Bryahna Shaw at Middle Blocker, Anais Duarte as Defensive Specialist, Rosie Perna as an Outside/Opposite Hitter, and Andrea Chavez as the teams Libero round out the returners. The incoming players include; Xie Wilson at OH/OPP, Hannah Chiswick at OH, Tayler Tarabokija at OH, Zaloni Johnson at MB, Molly Vander Horn at S/DS/L, Katie Mancini at S/DS, Karina Arias at OPP/OH, and Nalleyls Clemente at DS.
RVCC will host Penn State University-Lehigh Valley on Friday August 30th at 6 P.M. for their home opener.
