Lions Soar Past Blue Jays

North Branch, NJ – The RVCC Women's Basketball team defeated Manor College on Saturday, February 2nd by a final score of 73-53. The Lions have now swept the Blue Jays for two straight seasons, as RVCC won the first matchup of the year 79-44.

The Lions got off to an extremely slow start only scoring 9 points in the first quarter, compared to the 11 Manor was able to put on the board. However, in the second quarter RVCC was able to get things going their way with a lot of support from their bench. Freshman Khayla Flemmings gave the Lions the spark they needed drilling 2 huge attempts from downtown to really open the game up. Flemmings finished with 8 points on the day. During that same stretch the Lions saw some great defensive effort from fellow Freshmen Sonia Guiste, Dyliany De Leon, and Ali McGrath. McGrath has continued to be an immediate offensive threat the moment she steps on the floor as she finished the night with 12 points. The Lions outscored the Blue Jays 25-11 in the second quarter to take a 34-22 lead at halftime.

Helping McGrath and Flemmings in the scoring column were Sophomores Adrienne Amey and Olivia Nilsen. Nilsen led all scorers with 21 points while Amey chipped in 8, knocking down two of her four attempts from downtown. Freshman Precious Allah has continued to fill out the stat sheet for the Lions as finished with 7 points, a team high 4 steals, a team high 5 dimes, and 7 boards. The Lions typically struggle with rebounding, but everyone on the team managed to grab at least one as RVCC won the game on the glass 54-45. Holding down the paint for the Lions as usual was Sophomore Moira Phillips who finished with 8 boards. Seven different Lions had at least five boards on the day; Amey (5), Allah (7), Phillips (8), Nilsen (6), De Leon (6), Flemmings (5), and Morenike Akinrefon (5).

The Lions have a busy first full week of February as they travel to Bergen County Community College on Tuesday for a 5 PM tip. They'll then head up to Scranton, PA on Thursday to take on the Falcons of Lackawanna. Finally, they host the Bears from Harcum on Saturday the 9th at noon. RVCC currently sits at 17-6 on the season with a playoff berth secured for the second year in a row.
