Lions Sweep Season Series Over Mercer

West Windsor, NJ – The RVCC Women's Basketball Team traveled to Mercer County Community College on Tuesday, January 22nd 2019 where they beat the host Vikings 79-59. The win puts RVCC at 14-5 overall and 7-3 in Region XIX play, while Mercer falls to 5-12 overall and 5-8 in the Region.

The Lions came out of the gate roaring behind Sophomore guard Adrienne Amey. As has been the case for the last few games Amey came out on fire, dropping 14 of her 17 total points within the first few minutes of the frame. She was 4-6 from inside the arc and connected on 2 of her 3 attempts from downtown. The only other Lions to score in the first quarter were Morenike Akinrefon, who had 6, and Olivia Nilsen, who had 9, to help the Lions take a 29-9 lead into the second quarter. The second quarter was much of the same as the Lions outscored the Vikings 23-15. However, things got a little interesting in the third period when the Lions only managed to put up 9 points compared to the 24 from Mercer. RVCC figured out a way to get over the slump in the fourth quarter and finished the game on an 8-0 run. Nilsen led the way for the Lions with 25 points on the night, while Amey, and freshman Precious Allah each had 17. Allah also lead the team in assists as she dished out 9 dimes on the night to go along with her 6 boards. Akinrefon finished with 9 on the night, while Ali McGrath and Khalya Flemmings contributed 6 and 5 points, respectively. The Lions relied on Sophomore Moira Phillips to control the glass for them once again as she finished with 12 boards on the night. Phillips was one of three Lions to also get a block as Flemmings, and Lauren Armellino also got in on the block party.

The Lions previously beat Mercer County 80-61 in the first semester. The Lions have now swept their Region XIX foe two seasons in a row. RVCC travels down to Toms River on Thursday to take on the Vikings of Ocean County College for a 7 PM tip off.
