Softball Splits With Orange County

Branchburg - The RVCC softball team was back in action Saturday April 2 for a doubleheader against Orange County Community College. The Lions got off to a strong start in game 1 jumping out to an early 1-0 lead, and not letting off the gas, winning 6-5. Sophomore Amanda Monda started things off in the first inning with an RBI sac fly to get the offense going. Freshman Olivia Sims lead the way at the plate with an RBI triple in the third inning and a 3 run home run in the fourth. Freshman shortstop Olivia Mele also had an RBI. Sophomore pitcher Jillian Sims took the win for the Lions allowing just five hits and striking out 8.

 
Game two started out rocky for the Lions and they came up just short in game two, taking an unfortunate 12-9 loss. Orange County took an early lead scoring three in the first and three in the second but the Lions were determined, and outhit Orange 14 hits to 5. Monda and J. Sims each had a home run in the game. Freshman Kylie McKevitt had 3 doubles in 3 at bats, and Maura Yavornotzki hit a double as well. RV mounted a big comeback scoring 3 runs in the 5th and 4 in the 6th but came up just short in the 7th inning, taking the loss in a tough battled game. The Lions are scheduled to play next on Tuesday as they travel to Middlesex for a doubleheader.
