Lions Defeat Mercer

West Windsor Twp. NJ--The RVCC men's basketball team defeated Mercer County Community College Tuesday night by a final score of 88-82. The Lions started fast out of the gate, as they opened up the game with a 19-7 stretch over the first eight minutes. Mercer was able to cut the deficit down to 36-29 at halftime, then the Lions opened up the second half with a 14-0 run to extend the margin to 50-29 with 16 minutes remaining. However, Mercer would simply not go away as they hit a barrage of three pointers in the second half. Freshman guard Kevin Saylor was fouled with 30 seconds remaining and he made both free throws to make it 82-79 RVCC. The Lions were then able to hit the clutch free throws they needed to seal the win.

Leading the scoring for RVCC was freshman forward Ron Washington with 22 points on 9-20 shooting. He also had a team high 14 rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive end.  Saylor added 18 points, eight rebounds, and six steals. Freshman guard Kenyan Goodson scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds coming off of the bench, and sophomore guard Zaire Robinson scored 11 points and six rebounds.

The Lions were efficient from the free throw line, as they went 20-25 for the game. They controlled the glass as they outrebounded Mercer 53-27, and scored 23 second chance points.

With the win the Lions improve to 10-5, and next up is a home game against Luzerne County Community College on Thursday, January 26th at 7pm.
