Lions Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Sussex

The RVCC baseball team split the doubleheader against Sussex County Community College on Saturday April 23rd. Game one was taken by Sussex by a final score of 15-10, while RV won the second game by a final score of 23-7.

In game one, Sussex jumped out to a 6-2 early lead. Four runs in the top of the fourth extended the lead to 10-4, then an RVCC seventh inning rally fell short after the Lions scored four in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore second baseman Christopher Lyons had an excellent game at the plate, as he went 2-4 with 4RBIs including a home run. Sophomore outfielder Eric Drzewiecki went 2-5 with a home run and an RBI. Also contributing on offense was sophomore Joseph Mastrobattista, as he went 2-3 with 2RBIs and a double. Sophomore Billy Larkin picked up the loss, as in the start he went 5.2 innings and allowed six earned runs. 

In game two, the RVCC offense was on fire, as they scored 23 runs on 23 hits. They scored one run in the first, six in the second, and five in the third. The Lions blew the game open by way of an 8 run fifth inning. Drzewiecki had a big game, as he went 4-4 with two home runs, 3RBIs and five runs scored. Sophomore catcher Mike Dolan went 4-5 with 4RBIs and a double, while sophomore DH Kyle Dotey went 3-4 with 2RBIs. Lyons went 2-6 with 3RBIs and a double, and freshman outfielder Nick Cuba went 3-4 with a double an RBI and four runs scored. Pitching for the Lions was freshman Tom Sharfetz, as he went five innings and only allowed five earned runs while striking out four.

Next up for RVCC is an away game at Middlesex County College Tuesday April 26th.
